Management
Is management an art, a science, luck or a combination of many things? How do people manage? What is management? What do managers do?
Pretty standard questions really, that most people in management positions have been asked more than once.
Management is an art and a science. It is the art of making people behave more effectively than they would have without you and the science of being able to replicate this efficiency across a team of people. The secret is in how you do that.
For example, four workers can make 20 units in an eight-hour shift without a manager. If after hiring someone to manage them they still only make 20 units a day, what is the benefit to a business of having hired someone? However if they now make 30 units per day, the manager, has value. The same applies to service, or retail, or teaching, or any other kind of work. Can a group of individuals be more productive with a manager than without? That is the value of management - making a group of individuals more effective.
Management starts with planning. Good management starts with good planning. Without a plan your organisation will never succeed in attracting good managers who add value to your staff, who are able to recognise the talent that they have within their team and continue to develop them and therefore your business. If you happen to make it to the goal without planning, it will have been by luck or chance and is unlikely to be repeatable. In order to achieve a track record of accomplishments of which success is made you must first understand what is required of a manager in your organisation.
When it comes to management recruitment by gaining an understand of not only the responsibilities and tasks required of a manager in your business but also the characteristics needed to be successful in the organisational environment, you will have a much greater chance of finding the right person for your business. By combining this understanding with an assessment solution that compares these requirements with an individual’s capabilities, behaviours and interests your likelihood of hiring the best possible fit for your business and your people is significantly enhanced.
