Coaching & Mentoring
Developing your staff is arguably one of the most important considerations for any business. Not only does staff development lead to increased productivity, but it also improves staff satisfaction as a result of demonstrating a commitment to the individual, therefore having a positive effect on staff moral and retention.
There are many ways the develop staff including performance appraisals and performance reviews, workplace training, sales training, and technical training to name a few. Generally speaking however, for employee development to have the most impact on employee engagement it needs to be individualised and focused.
Performance appraisals and reviews are valuable but tend to be reactive in so much as they relate to past performance. The real power when using information to determine development needs comes from knowing what to expect in the future so you can capitalise on strengths and address opportunities for improvement before they have a negative impact on your business. Unless you know your staff as well (if not better) than you know yourself then this form of proactive development cannot occur without assistance.
Once a manager has identified individual development needs, the opportunity to improve productivity and performance exists but requires careful consideration. In a perfect world, managers would find their entire team is in need of exactly the same development and could therefore apply a development program that could address the team’s needs. However, in reality we often find that each individual within our team requires attention in different areas. This is where coaching and mentoring can be more beneficial than team based training. When managers coach and mentor individuals within their team, their ability to address specific development needs is greatly improved and staff become even more engaged because they are being treated as an individual.
Profiles International works with our clients to identify development needs of individuals within their team specifically in relation to the requirements to succeed in that person’s role. Our assessments provide a relevant, objective and accurate means by which business can identify individual development needs. |
